Sweetie Breads started in 2025 with a small sourdough fan: my young son. He loved the sourdough we bought before moving to Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore, so I started making it myself. His appetite got things going, and my curiosity took it from there.
After moving, baking became a way to get out, meet new people, and share my creations. What started with bread for my family became a way to connect with the community we now call home.
The name came from my daughter, who loves giving people names like “Sweetie Fred” and “Sweetie Coconut” when she’s playing. My sister Hannah became “Sweetie Fred,” which made us laugh—and somewhere along the way, Sweetie Breads was born. Hannah has since joined the bakery, so Sweetie Fred is officially part of Sweetie Breads.
My love of feeding people goes back to my Baba. Some of my favourite memories are of watching her make perogies and learning to pinch the edges tight so the filling stayed inside. That little detail has stayed with me, along with her love of cooking and feeding others. My Ukrainian roots are woven into those memories, and being in the kitchen helps me feel connected to her and carry that love forward.
The wheat stalk in our logo is another connection to those roots. For me, it represents nourishment, the harvest, and generations of family. It brings together what Sweetie Breads means to me: simple ingredients, feeding people, and the love my Baba shared through her cooking.
These days, that love comes with a fascination for fermentation. I love seeing what a living sourdough starter, flour, water, salt, and a little patience can become. There’s plenty of experimenting, too—and someone has to taste it all.
We’re a little laid-back, a little flour-covered, and always hungry. Whether you’re picking up a favourite loaf or trying our latest creation, we’re happy to share a little piece of our kitchen with you.
We bake fresh, small-batch sourdough for wholesale accounts on the Eastern Shore.
